We are glad to announce the third LIG-Synergy seminar that will happen on June 26th. The theme chosen for this edition is "Experiments in Computer Science". The idea is encourage interactions between members of the LIG laboratory. It will be a social event where you get the opportunity to exchange ideas about your research, to meet new people and have a good time. The theme encompasses both research done by researchers or students, and the work and tools of the support staff (for example the Pimlig group). A Barbecue is planned after the seminar and everyone is welcome.

For those who want to share and present some of their work, just submit your proposal by email to Cedric Lagnier before June 10th : a title and a short summary ( 10 lines).

For this seminar, 3 formats are available : A presentation for a software demonstration. This software could be developed by you or your team, or a software presentation that you may recommend to other PhD. A short presentation, about 10/20 minutes long, presenting your research work/domain and advancement. A video, live demo or any other kind of demonstration.

Feel free to choose from among any of these presentations' format, you can do a presentation as well as a demonstration ! This is up to you, to share ideas and raise other lab members ? awareness on the particular topic of computer science as an experimental science.

L'Alpine Rendez-Vous (ARV) est une manifestation de recherche centrée sur les technologies de l'information et l'informatique pour l'apprentissage qui se tient tous les 2 ans, depuis 2007, sur une semaine. La manifestation est constituée d'un ensemble de workshops spécialisés. L'ARV est une manifestation intrinsèquement pluridisciplinaire, alliant chercheurs issus de l'informatique et des sciences humaines (domaines de recherche des participants de la dernière édition : information technology, information science and education technology ; education and learning sciences ; psychology ; cognitive science, didactics and neuroscience).

La prochaine édition sera organisée par l'équipe MeTAH du LIG. Les co-responsables scientifiques de ARV'2013 sont Pierre Tchounikine (Professeur d'informatique, Université Joseph Fourier de Grenoble, responsable de l'équipe MeTAH) et Frank Fischer (Professor of Psychology, LMU-University of Munich).

On attend entre 80 et 100 chercheurs, Europe principalement mais déjà des contacts / USA & autres.

Le 14 juin prochain aura lieu l'édition 2012 de la Journée des Doctorants du LIG. Moment d'animation scientifique dans la vie du LIG, cette journée est l'occasion de rencontres et d'échanges mais aussi de convivialité autour d'un buffet. Tous les membres du laboratoire sont conviés à cette journée.

Lors de cette journée, les doctorants en 2ème année de thèse présenteront leur travail sous la forme d'un poster et lors d'une session "présentation-éclair" (deux minutes d'exposé par doctorant). Comme l'an dernier, un concours primera les trois meilleures prestations.

Philippe Kruchten is known as Director of Process Development (RUP) at Rational Software, and developer of the 4+1 view model. He is currently professor of software engineering, in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, where he holds an NSERC Chair in Design Engineering. He teaches software engineering, more specifically software project management, and two interdisciplinary project courses on innovation, entrepreneurship, system engineering. Philippe does research in software architecture and software processes, with a handful of graduate students, and many collaborators around the world.

Résumé

Is “Agile architecture” an oxymoron, an attempt to blend two totally incompatible approaches ?

Agile proponents usually picture software architecture as a non-agile practice, with a big up-front design effort, massive documentation, and the smell of waterfall (although everybody wants to be called an architect). However, when architectural issues are ignored, certain classes of systems will “hit a wall” and collapse.

In this presentation we will review the real issues at stake, get past the rhetoric and posturing, and suggest that the two cultures can coexist and support each other. In particular, we will show that in a backlog we can distinguish visible elements (features) from invisible aspects (architecture) and their dependencies, and from defects and technical debt.

Résumé

Over the years we've identified some of the strategies and tactics software architects use during the design of new, bold, large software-intensive systems : divide-and-conquer, brainstorming, reuse, etc.. But we also observed some strange tactics, biases, reasoning fallacies that creep in and pervert somehow the design process. They go by simple, funny or fancy names : anchoring, red herring, elephant in the room, post hoc ergo propter hoc, non sequitur, argumentum verbosium, etc. This talk will do a little illustrated catalogue of these games, with examples, and how they sometimes combine onto subtle but elaborate political plots. In other words, this talk is about cognitive biases and how they affect software development.

Résumé
In this talk I will first present the current status of what has been called Library Linked Data, or in other words how libraries and other cultural heritage institutions are shifting towards openness and the Web, by publishing their data following the Linked Data principles using RDF, URIs, RDF(S), etc. In the same line, I will briefly present the findings and reports published by the W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group. In the second part of the talk, I will present the datos.bne.es project, an effort by the National Library of Spain together with the Ontology Engineering Group (UPM, Madrid). I will discuss the initial requirements, the methodological approach, and the research questions raised by the process of mapping and transformation of the source data (in MARC21 format) into RDF using RDFS/OWL ontologies . Also, I will talk about MARiMbA the tool developed within the context of the project and that supports the ETL process and its main goal : ensuring the quality of the produced data and coverage of the source data while facilitating the mapping task to the domain experts (librarians). Finally, I will present the results of the project, discuss the future lines and compare datos.bne.es to other projects of big National Libraries in Europe, in terms of the resulting data, the methodological and the technological aspects.

Résumé

L'utilisation d'équipes de robots a pris de l'ampleur ces dernières années. Cela est dû aux avantages que peut offrir une équipe de robot par rapport à un robot seul pour la réalisation d'une même tâche. Cela s'explique aussi par le fait que ce type de plates-formes deviennent de plus en plus abordables et fiables. Ainsi, l'utilisation d'une équipe de véhicules aériens devient une alternative viable. Cette thèse se concentre sur le problème du déploiement d'une équipe de Micro-Véhicules Aériens (MAV) pour effectuer des missions de surveillance sur un terrain inconnu de morphologie arbitraire. Puisque la morphologie du terrain est inconnue et peut être complexe et non-convexe, les algorithmes standards ne sont pas applicables au problème particulier traité dans cette thèse. Pour y remédier, une nouvelle approche basée sur un algorithme d'optimisation cognitive et adaptatif (CAO) est proposée et évaluée. Une propriété fondamentale de cette approche est qu'elle partage les mêmes caractéristiques de convergence que les algorithmes de descente de gradient avec contraintes qui exigent une connaissance parfaite de la morphologie du terrain pour optimiser la couverture. Il est également proposé une formulation différente du problème afin d'obtenir une solution distribuée, ce qui nous permet de surmonter les inconvénients d'une approche centralisée et d'envisager également des capacités de communication limitées. De rigoureux arguments mathématiques et des simulations étendues établissent que l'approche proposée fournit une méthodologie évolutive et efficace qui intègre toutes les contraintes physiques particulières et est capable de guider les robots vers un arrangement qui optimise localement la surveillance. Finalement, la méthode proposée est mise en œuvre sur une équipe de MAV réels pour réaliser la surveillance d'un environnement extérieur complexe.

Résumé

Sharing of user data has substantially increased over the past few years facilitated by sophisticated Web and mobile applications, including social networks. For instance, users can easily register their trajectories over time based on their daily trips captured with GPS receivers as well as share and relate them with trajectories of other users. Analyzing user trajectories over time can reveal habits and preferences. This information can be used to recommend content to single users or to group users together based on similar trajectories and/or preferences. Recording GPS tracks generates very large amounts of data. Therefore clustering algorithms are required to efficiently analyze such data. In this paper, we focus on investigating ways of efficiently analyzing user trajectories and extracting user preferences from them. We demonstrate an algorithm for clustering user GPS trajectories. In addition, we propose an algorithm to correlate trajectories based on near points between two or more users. The obtained results provided interesting avenues for exploring Location-based Social Network (LBSN) applications.
